Sclerocactus parviflorus subsp. terrae-canyonae is an endangered subspecies of the genus Sclerocactus parviflorus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The subspecies was named after its occurrence in Canyonland . English common names are "Canyonland Cactus" and "Eagle Claw Cactus".
description
Sclerocactus parviflorus subsp. terrae-canyonae grows individually spherical to elongated. It becomes 8 to 25 cm long and 5 to 15 cm in diameter. The yellow, light green, bell-shaped small flowers are characteristic . They are 2 to 3.5 cm long and wide. The flowers appear in a wreath around the apex. The flowering time is due to the altitude in June.
distribution
Sclerocactus parviflorus subsp. terrae-canyonae grows in the Great Basin Desert in Utah in lava rock or red sandy soil on plains or hills at altitudes of 1600 to 2100 meters and is associated with Pediocactus simpsonii , Escobaria vivipara var. arizonica , various cacti and yucca species .
Systematics
The description as Sclerocactus parviflorus subsp. terrae-canyonae was made in 1994 by Ken Heil & Mark Porter.
Synonyms are Sclerocactus terrae-canyonae K.D.Heil (1979) and Sclerocactus parviflorus f. terrae-canyonae Hochstätter (1998).
