Pediocactus simpsonii is a species of the genus Pediocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors James Hervey Simpson (1813–1883). English common names are "Plains Cactus" and "Mountains Cactus".

The spherical, cylindrical to oval growing, group-forming Pediocactus simpsonii reaches heights of growth of 4 to 20 cm and a diameter of 3 to 15 cm. The funnel-shaped to tubular flowers have a length of 1 to 3.5 cm and a diameter of 2 to 2.5 cm; they appear like a wreath around the vertex. The bracts are pink, white to yellow.

Pediocactus simpsonii is a representative of the Pediocactus section . It is the most common species of the genus. This species is hardy to minus 30 ° C when dry , and it can be grown without roots in Europe. In the collection of K. Krätschmer (Odernheim, Germany) specimens have been cultivated for years without protection.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pediocactus simpsonii grows in the states of Arizona , Nevada , Colorado , Idaho , Montana , New Mexico , Wyoming and Utah in a wide variety of soil types, in "Pinyon Juniper Forests", in the "Rocky Mountains Montane Forest" and in "Sagebrush Deserts" in Altitudes between 1300 and 3100 meters. This species is often associated with Sclerocactus parviflorus , Sclerocactus glaucus , Sclerocactus pubispinus , Sclerocactus wetlandicus, various Escobaria , Echinocereus , Opuntia species and Yucca glauca .

The first description by George Engelmann under the name Echinocactus simpsonii was published in 1863. The American botanists Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put it in 1913 as Pediocactus simpsonii in the genus Pediocactus .
