Pediocactus simpsonii subsp. robustior is a subspecies of the Pediocactus plant in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet refers to the robust habitus . English common names are "Battle Mountain Cactus" and "Long Spined Cactus".

description

The spherical to cylindrical single growing Pediocactus simpsonii subsp. robustior reaches heights of 5 to 20 cm and a diameter of 5 to 25 cm. The root system is fibrous, while Pediocactus nigrispinus has beet-shaped roots.

The bell-shaped, hermaphrodite flowers are 1 to 2 cm long and 2 to 3 cm in diameter. The bracts are yellow or rarely pink. The flowering period extends from May to June.

Systematics and distribution

Pediocactus simpsonii subsp. robustior grows in Nevada , in the Rocky Mountains in subalpine forests at altitudes between 1300 and 2500 meters on rocky outcrops or low hills.

It is hardy to minus 20 ° C when dry . Real-root cultivation is possible in Europe. The typical subspecies Pediocactus simpsonii subsp. robustior of the exposed areas in the high mountains of Nevada are hardly known in the USA and Europe and are accordingly rare in the collections.
