Sclerocactus pubispinus is a species of the genus Sclerocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet pubispinus refers to the pubescent thorns in the juvenile stage. English common names are "Great Basin Eagle-Claw Cactus" and "Great Basin Fishhook Cactus".

description

The spherical to cylindrical growing Sclerocactus pubispinus becomes 8 to 10 cm long and 4 to 7 cm wide. It has two to five hooked central spines and eight to ten radial spines.

The yellow, rarely pink, funnel-shaped flowers are 2 to 5 centimeters long and wide. In contrast, the closely related Sclerocactus spinosior blooms pink and the flowers are tubular. The flowering period is from April to the end of May.

distribution

Sclerocactus pubispinus is common in the Great Basin desert in the border area of Nevada and Utah at altitudes between 1400 and 2100 meters. It grows on limestone soil on flat hills in the typical Sagebrush desert in the open "Juniper-Pinyon woodland". The species is associated with Pediocactus simpsonii , Micropuntia species, Escobaria vivipara subsp. arizonica , Echinocereus engelmannii var. chrysanthus , Yucca harrimaniae and various Opuntia species.

Systematics

The first description by the American botanist George Engelmann under the name Echinocactus pubispinus was published in 1863. The American botanist Lyman Benson placed the species in the genus Sclerocactus under the species name Sclerocactus pubispinus , which is valid today . The description was published in 1966. Further synonyms for the species are Pediocactus pubispinus G. Arp (1966) and Sclerocactus pubispinur var. Spinosior Welsh et al. (1987). The species Sclerocactus pubispinus is placed within the genus Sclerocactus in the section Sclerocactus .

Danger

Sclerocactus pubispinus is endangered and included in Appendix I of the Washington Convention for the Protection of Endangered Species. In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
