Echinocereus engelmannii grows in the Joshua Tree National Park together with the Joshua palm lily and Cylindropuntia bigelovii .

Echinocereus engelmannii is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet engelmannii honors the American botanist George Engelmann . Common names are "Calico Cactus", "Dagger-Spine Hedgehog", "Engelmann's Hedgehog", "Indian Strawberry Hedgehog", "Needle-Spine Hedgehog", "Purple-Spined Hedgehog Cactus" and "Strawberry Hedgehog".

Echinocereus engelmannii grows branching from the base and forms open to compact groups with up to 60 shoots , which are almost 1 meter in diameter. The cylindrical, green shoots largely covered by the dense thorns reach heights of 5 to 60 centimeters with diameters of 3.8 to 8.7 centimeters. There are ten to thirteen barely humped ribs . The thorns are very variable in size and color. The two to seven angular, strong to flexible, straight to twisted, mostly spreading central spines are up to 7 centimeters long. The six to 14 radial spines lying close to the shoot surface are up to 2 centimeters long.

The short funnel-shaped flowers are a little purple to magenta to lavender and appear in the upper half of the shoots. They are up to 9 centimeters long and reach the same diameter. The red, juicy and edible fruits are up to 3 centimeters long and covered with areoles that fall off.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus engelmannii is distributed in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico from sea ​​level to altitudes of up to 2,400 meters.

The first description as Cereus engelmannii was in 1852 by George Engelmann. Charles Lemaire placed the species in the genus Echinocereus in 1868 .
