Charles Christopher Parry
Charles Christopher Parry (born August 28, 1823 in Admington , England , † February 20, 1890 in Davenport , Iowa ) was a British - American botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Parry ".
Live and act
In 1832 Parry moved with his parents to the USA, where the family first settled in New York . He studied medicine at Columbia University and botany with John Torrey , Asa Gray and George Engelmann . Parry was the first to describe the Engelmann spruce ( Picea engelmannii ) and the Soledad pine ( Pinus torreyana ); he named both after his mentors.
As a passionate mountaineer , he managed the first ascent of Grays Peak in 1861. His scientific archive is located at Iowa State University .
Honors
The plant genus Parryella Torr. & A.Gray from the legume family (Fabaceae) is named after him, as well as Parry Peak in the US state of Colorado and various other plants such as Parry Pinyon . The generic names Neoparrya Mathias from the umbelliferae family (Apiaceae) and Parrycactus Doweld from the cactus family (Cactaceae) have also been named in his honor.
