description

Cylindropuntia bigelovii grows shrubby or tree-like with open branched crowns and reaches heights of growth of up to 2 meters. The branches are arranged at an acute angle. On the greenish purple to purple, 4 to 18 centimeters long and 1 to 2 centimeters in diameter shoot sections there are protruding, elongated humps. The somewhat rounded tan to brown areoles turn gray with age and have dark yellow glochids up to 1 millimeter long . The six to eight thorns are present over the entire length of the shoot sections. They are usually interlocking, protruding to spread out, yellow to golden yellow and later turning brown. The thorns are 1 to 1.8 inches long. Their sheaths are white to cream in color.

The flowers are yellowish green, yellow, golden yellow, bronze, red, pink or magenta in color. The yellowish green or reddish fruits are leathery, fleshy and not thorny. They are 2.5 to 4 inches long and reach 1 to 2 inches in diameter. The fruits initially have protruding humps that later disappear. The fruits can proliferate.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cylindropuntia bigelovii is common in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico in the vegetation of the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts at altitudes of 300 to 900 meters.

The first description as Opuntia bigelovii by George Engelmann was published in 1856. Frederik Marcus Knuth placed the species in 1930 in the genus Cylindropuntia . A distinction is made between the following varieties :

  • Cylindropuntia bigelovii var. Bigelovii
  • Cylindropuntia bigelovii var. Ciribe (Engelm. Ex JMCoult.) Rebman

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
