Cylindropuntia is a genus of plants from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek noun "κύλινδρσς" (cylindros) for roller and refers to the cylindrical shape of the shoots.

description

The species of the genus Cylindropuntia grow shrubby or tree-like. They are upright and heavily branched. The cylindrical to somewhat club-shaped shoot sections are straight, clearly humped, glabrous and of different lengths. The differently shaped areoles wear glochids . The most noticeable characteristic of the genus is the paper-like covering of the thorns ("pants thorns"). The main spines are at most flattened at the base.

The flowers are yellow-green, yellow, bronze, red or magenta. The cylindrical to almost spherical, sometimes club-shaped fruits are fleshy or dry. They can be thorny, green to yellow to red in color and turn brown when they dry up. The pale yellow to light brown, sometimes gray, seeds are flattened and 2.5 to 5 millimeters in length or diameter.

Systematics and distribution

The species of the genus Cylindropuntia are widespread in the southwest and southern United States and through southern Mexico to Mexico City . One species occurs in the Caribbean and another in South America .

George Engelmann established Cylindropuntia in 1856 as a subgenus of Opuntia ( Opuntia subg. Cylindropuntia ). Frederik Marcus Knuth raised the sub-genus to the rank of a genus in 1930. The type species of the genus is Opuntia arborescens . The genus includes the following species:
