description

Cylindropuntia wolfii has a shrubby growth, is more or less upright, densely branched and reaches heights of 0.5 to 1.5 meters. There are clearly recognizable bumps on the yellowish to gray-green, 6 to 40 centimeters long and 2.5 to 4 centimeters in diameter shoot sections . The circular to triangular, tan to yellow woolly areoles turn gray with age and have irregularly long yellow to light brown glochids . The twelve to 30 golden to light brown thorns become darker with age and are up to 3 centimeters long. The thorn sheaths are translucent yellow to light brown.

The flowers are yellowish green, with a bronze or slightly purplish brown tinge. The grayish tan-colored, clearly humped fruits are dry and densely thorny. They are 2.5 to 3 inches long and 1.5 to 3 inches in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cylindropuntia wolfii is distributed in the United States in southern California and in neighboring Mexico in northern Baja California in rocky, dry locations at altitudes of 300 to 1200 meters.

The first description as Opuntia echinocarpa var. Wolfii by Lyman David Benson was published in 1969. Marc A. Baker placed the species in 2001 in the genus Cylindropuntia . Nomenclatory synonyms are Opuntia wolfii (LDBenson) MABaker (1992) and Grusonia wolfii (LDBenson) GDRowley (2006).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The species is very common locally, so that the development of the populations is considered stable.
