Cylindropuntia thurberi is a species of the genus Cylindropuntia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet thurberi honors the American plant collector George Thurber (1821–1890).

description

Cylindropuntia thurberi grows shrubby with scattered branches and reaches heights of 1.5 to 4 meters. On the green, slightly purple or reddish tinged, sometimes glaucous , 10 to 25 centimeters long and 1 to 1.5 centimeters in diameter, the shoot sections have wide humps. The yellowish or gray woolly areoles can carry glochids . The three to seven spread, needle-like, delicate, yellow to brownish thorns are 0.5 to 1.2 inches long. Their paper-like thorn sheaths are yellowish.

The flowers are brownish to lemon yellow. The obovate fruits are thorny. They are 2 to 3 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cylindropuntia thurberi is widespread in the Mexican states of Sonora and Sinaloa up to an altitude of 1070 meters.

The first description as Opuntia thurberi by George Engelmann was published in 1856. Frederik Marcus Knuth placed the species in the genus Cylindropuntia in 1936 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The species is very richly represented, so that the development of the populations is regarded as stable.
