Cylindropuntia alcahes is a species of plant in the genus Cylindropuntia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet alcahes is the Indian name for the species. A Spanish common name is "Clavellina".
description
Cylindropuntia alcahes grows shrubby to tree-shaped, is dense and compact to open branched and reaches heights of growth of up to 3 meters. On the shoot sections 2 to 20 centimeters long and 1.4 to 4.5 centimeters in diameter there are rhombus-shaped, spirally arranged humps. Some of the shoot sections are easily detachable. The cream, yellow or tan areoles turn gray with age. They have yellow to brown glochids 1 to 4 millimeters long , which are sometimes hardly noticeable. The five to 21 spines are present on most areoles, sometimes they are absent. They are cream-colored to yellow to a little orange-brown and 0.4 to 2 inches long. The one to six main spines are indistinguishable from the two to eleven radial spines. Their sheaths are light.
The flowers are yellow, green or reddish magenta in color. The spherical to club-shaped, green to yellow, humped to smooth fruits are fleshy. They are sometimes proliferating. The fruits are 1.5 to 5 centimeters long and 1.4 to 3 centimeters in diameter.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Cylindropuntia alcahes is distributed in Mexico from central Baja California to the southern tip of Baja California Sur as well as on some islands in the Pacific and in the Gulf of Mexico in the desert and the coastal bush up to altitudes of 1100 meters.
The first description as Opuntia alcahes by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber was published in 1895. Frederik Marcus Knuth placed the species in the genus Cylindropuntia in 1936 . A distinction is made between the following varieties :
- Cylindropuntia alcahes var. Alcahes
- Cylindropuntia alcahes var. Burrageana (Britton & Rose) Rebman
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
