Cylindropuntia versicolor is a species of the genus Cylindropuntia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet is derived from the Latin word versicolor for 'colorful' and refers to the differently colored thorns. Spanish common names are “Staghorn Cholla” and “Morada Cholla”.

description

Cylindropuntia versicolor grows tree-like or shrubby, branches at an acute angle and reaches heights of up to 2 meters. On the greenish purple to purple, 4 to 18 centimeters long and 1 to 2 centimeters in diameter shoot sections are protruding elongated humps. The rounded, tan to brown woolly areoles turn gray with age and have dark yellow glochids up to 1 millimeter long . The six to eight somewhat interlocking spines are present on all areoles. They are short, golden, and somewhat bristle-like. The upper thorns are erect to spread, reddish brown and 0.6 to 1.1 inches long. The bent back and somewhat flattened basal spines are whitish to reddish brown and reach a length of 1 to 1.8 centimeters. The thorn sheaths are yellow to brownish.

The flowers are yellowish green, yellow, bronze, red, pink or magenta in color. The obovate, yellowish green, often red or purple tinted fruits are leathery, fleshy and often proliferating. They are 2.5 to 4 inches long and 1 to 2 inches in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

The first description as Opuntia versicolor by John Merle Coulter was published in 1896. Frederik Marcus Knuth placed the species in the genus Cylindropuntia in 1936 . A nomenclature synonym is Opuntia thurberi subsp. versicolor (Engelm. ex JMCoult.) Felger & CHLowe (1970)

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The total population is very dispersed, but locally the species occurs very frequently, so that the development of the populations is regarded as stable.
