Arnold Lang

Arnold Lang (born June 18, 1855 in Oftringen , † November 30, 1914 in Zurich , entitled to live in Oftringen) was a Swiss zoologist .

Life

Lang attended the old canton school in Aarau and later studied biology at the universities of Geneva and Jena . In March 1876 he did his doctorate under Ernst Haeckel and was habilitated in May 1876 . From 1878 to 1885 he assisted at the zoological station in Naples , in 1886 he was awarded the Karl Ritter Professorship for phylogenetic zoology in Jena , which he held until 1889, and from 1889 to 1914 he was professor of zoology and comparative anatomy and director of the zoological institute and the collections at both Zurich universities. From 1898 to 1900 he was rector of the university .

Arnold Lang was an eminent zoologist, comparative anatomist, embryologist, and early genetic experimenter. The planning and implementation of the university buildings in what is now the old university center was largely designed by him. In 1914 he was awarded an honorary doctorate (Dr. hc) from the ETH Zurich and the Law Faculty of the University of Zurich .

He found his final resting place in the Nordheim cemetery .
