The eleven to 27 light yellow spines are present on all areoles and are 2.1 to 4.4 centimeters long.

The yellow-bronze to reddish magenta-colored, sometimes mixed flowers are either purely feminine or hermaphrodite ( gynodioecia ). The top-shaped to barrel-shaped, gray-green to tan-colored or gray fruits are dry, densely thorny and burr-like. They are 1.7 to 2.4 inches long and 1.5 to 2.5 inches in diameter.
