Cylindropuntia calmalliana is a species of the genus Cylindropuntia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet calmalliana means '(lat. Calmallianus) from the Calmalli site in Mexico'.

description

Cylindropuntia calmalliana grows shrubby with numerous upright and ascending shoots and reaches heights of 1 to 2 meters. On the not easily sloping, gray-green, sometimes glaucous , 8.5 to 25 centimeters long and 2 to 2.7 centimeters in diameter measuring shoot sections are elongated humps. The cream-colored areoles turn gray with age and wear inconspicuous dark glochids , 2 to 3 millimeters long , some of which are often bristle-like. The four to nine spines are present on most areoles. They are orange-brown, have a yellow tip and turn gray with age. The one to four upright main spines are 1.5 to 3.5 inches long. There are also three to five secondary thorns. The loose-fitting sheaths of the thorns are light-colored.

The flowers are yellowish brown or bronze to red. The barrel-shaped to club-shaped, green to yellow fruits are fleshy and (almost) without thorns. They are 2.5 to 5.5 inches long and 1.8 to 2.6 inches in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cylindropuntia calmalliana is widespread in the Mexican state of Baja California in the area of Bahía de Sebastián Vizcaíno .

The first description as Opuntia calmalliana by John Merle Coulter was published in 1840. Frederik Marcus Knuth placed the species in the genus Cylindropuntia in 1936 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
