The Bahía de Sebastián Vizcaíno is a wide bay on the west coast of the Mexican Baja California peninsula .

With a coastline of around 480 km, it is one of the most extensive bays in the Pacific Ocean on the west coast of North America . The Mexican states of Baja California and Baja California Sur have shares in the bay . The northern state also includes Isla de Cedros , the largest island in the bay, which is known for its numerous elephant seals.

The narrow headland of Lower California on the Bahía de Sebastián Vizcaíno is criss-crossed by the Yubay , Calmalli and Vizcaínokette mountain ranges and is therefore sparsely populated. Every year from January to March, animal lovers observe the love games of the gray whales at the few accessible points , which give birth at the same time in the bay due to the gestation period of 13 months. Parts of the bay are considered a shelter for whales and were declared a World Heritage Site in 1993 .

The Bahía de Sebastián Vizcaíno was first discovered in 1539 by the Spanish navigator Francisco de Ulloa , although it was later named after his compatriot Sebastián Vizcaíno .
