description

Cylindropuntia ganderi grows shrubby with upwardly curved branches and reaches heights of 0.5 to 1.5 meters. On the firmly adhering, green, 5 to 20 centimeters long and 1.7 to 4.5 centimeters in diameter shoot sections there are humps that flow together to form ribs. The yellow to tan woolen areoles turn gray with age and have yellow to rust-colored glochids 0.5 to 6 millimeters long . The 11 to 28 thorns are present on almost all areoles and cover the shoots somewhat. They are spread out to upright, with a circular or flattened cross-section, white to reddish, and become darker with age. The thorns are 2 to 3.5 inches long. The loosely fitting sheaths of the thorns are white to yellow.

The flowers are greenish yellow. The spherical, burdock-like, initially yellowish fruits are dry tan.
