Cylindropuntia californica is a species of the genus Cylindropuntia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet californica indicates the location in California. A foreign language common name is "Snake cholla".

description

Cylindropuntia californica has a shrubby growth, is spread out to upright and reaches heights of 0.3 to 2.5 meters. On the green to slightly purple-colored, 6 to 30 centimeters long and 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters in diameter shoot sections, there are protruding humps that sometimes come together to form ribs. The elliptical tan colored areoles turn gray with age and have dense yellow to reddish brown glochids . The five to thirteen identical or unequal spines are present on most areoles. They are yellow to orange-brown and have a lighter tip. The thorns are up to 3 inches long. Their slightly loosely fitting sheaths are whitish to brown.

The yellow to greenish yellow flowers reach lengths of 1.5 to 3 centimeters. The short top-shaped to almost spherical, leathery yellowish fruits later turn tan. They are 1.5 to 3.2 inches long and 1.3 to 2.6 inches in diameter. The fruits are covered with a few thorns or are not thorny.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cylindropuntia californica is common in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico at altitudes from 0 to 1900 meters.

The first description as Cereus californicus by John Torrey and Asa Gray was published in 1840. Frederik Marcus Knuth placed the species in the genus Cylindropuntia in 1936 . A distinction is made between the following varieties :

  • Cylindropuntia californica var. Californica
  • Cylindropuntia californica var. Delgadilloana (Rebman & Pinkava) Rebman
  • Cylindropuntia californica var. Parkeri (JMCoult.) Pinkava
  • Cylindropuntia californica var. Rosarica (GELinds.) Rebman

A nomenclature synonym is Opuntia californica (Torr. & A.Gray) Coville (1899).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. Due to urban development, the populations in California are threatened and therefore the population is estimated to be decreasing.
