Cylindropuntia abyssi is a species of plant in the genus Cylindropuntia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet abyssi means '(Latin abyssus) groundless, unfathomable, abyss'.

Cylindropuntia abyssi has a shrubby growth, is openly branched and can reach heights of up to 1 meter. On the more or less easily separable, 8 to 14 centimeters long and 1.8 to 2.5 centimeters in diameter measuring shoot sections there are protruding broad humps. The elliptical white to gray areoles have light yellow glochids up to 1.5 millimeters long , which stand together in small inconspicuous clusters. The ten to 15 thorns , arranged in brush-like clusters, are white to yellowish tan and turn gray with age. They are bendable and their paper sleeves are silvery white. The cross-sectionally round to flattened upper spines are erect, spreading and 1.8 to 3.2 centimeters long. The upright to descending lower spines are curved backwards, flattened, sometimes twisted, and 2.3 to 3.8 inches long.

The light yellow to greenish yellow flowers reach lengths of 1.5 to 2 centimeters. The dry green fruits turn pale yellow. They are 1.4 to 1.7 inches long and 1.5 to 1.8 inches in diameter. They have up to two short thorns.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cylindropuntia abyssi is common in the United States in northwestern Arizona in Mohave County at altitudes of 500 to 950 meters.

The first description as Opuntia abyssi by John Pinckney Hester was published in 1943. Curt Backeberg placed the species in the genus Cylindropuntia in 1958 . Possibly this species is a natural hybrid in which one parent is Cylindropuntia bigelovii .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
