description

Cylindropuntia prolifera grows shrubby or tree-shaped, is upright and reaches heights of 0.6 to 2.5 meters. On the slightly sloping greenish-gray, 4 to 15 centimeters long and 3.5 to 5 centimeters in diameter shoot sections there are protruding humps. The somewhat rounded, tan-colored woolly areoles turn black with age and have yellow to brown glochids 0.5 to 2.5 millimeters long . The six to twelve thorns are present on all areoles with the exception of the lowest. They are spread out, the lower ones bent downwards, needle-like and reddish brown to dark brown. The longest of them are up to 2 inches long. The sheaths of the thorns are shiny, light yellowish brown.

The flowers are pink to magenta in color. The top-shaped fruits are fleshy and usually sterile. They are 2.1 to 3.5 inches long and 2 to 3.2 inches in diameter. The fruits often proliferate and then form short upright chains of two to five fruits.
