Cylindropuntia tunicata is a species of the genus Cylindropuntia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet tunicata means '(Latin tunicatus) clad in a cloak, cape'. Spanish trivial names are "Abrojo", "Clavellina", "Coyonoxtle", "Sheathed Cholla" and "Tencholote".
description
Cylindropuntia tunicata grows as a densely branched shrub and reaches heights of 30 to 60 centimeters. On the slightly sloping, light green to green, 5 to 10 centimeters long and 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters in diameter shoot sections there are strongly protruding, wide bumps. The triangular, yellow or tan woolen areoles have 0.5 to 1.2 millimeters long, light yellow glochids . The five to twelve thorns are present on most areoles and cover the shoots. They are spread out, needle-like, yellow and 3 to 6 inches long. The loose, persistent thorn sheaths are yellow to tan.
The yellow to yellowish green flowers are up to 3 centimeters long. The top-shaped to club-shaped, red fruits are fleshy and usually not thorny. They are usually sterile and have conspicuous humps.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Cylindropuntia tunicata is distributed in northern to central Mexico and possibly in the United States in the state of Texas in the vegetation of the Chihuahua Desert at altitudes of 100 to 1900 meters. Its distribution area also extends over the states of Ecuador , Peru , Argentina and Chile . These occurrences in South America are possibly due to the carry-over of shoot sections by humans or cattle.
The first description as Cactus tunicatus by Johann Georg Christian Lehmann was published in 1927. Frederik Marcus Knuth placed the species in 1930 in the genus Cylindropuntia . Nomenclatory synonyms are Opuntia tunicata (loam.) Link & Otto (1837) and Grusonia tunicata (loam.) GDRowley (2006).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
use
Cylindropuntia tunicata is used medicinally in North America. The species is also planted as a living fence.
