Cylindropuntia molesta is a species of plant in the genus Cylindropuntia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet molesta means 'annoying' (Latin molestus ). A Spanish common name is "Agujilla".

Cylindropuntia molesta grows shrubby with open and occasionally basal branches or tree-shaped and reaches heights of 1.5 to 2.5 meters. On the firmly attached green or slightly clawed , ascending, cylindrical, 5 to 40 centimeters long and 1.2 to 2.5 centimeters in diameter shoot sections there are large, wide bumps. The broadly elliptical, yellowish woolen areoles have yellowish brown glochids 1 to 2.5 millimeters long . The one to five reddish main spines have a yellowish tip and turn a little purple to black with age. They are 1 to 3 inches long. The two to seven finer secondary spines reach lengths of 0.5 to 1.2 centimeters.

The bronze-purple flowers are 3 to 5 centimeters in diameter. The broad, obovate, clearly wilted fruits are fleshy and thorny. They are 2.5 to 3.5 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cylindropuntia molesta is common in the Mexican states of Baja California and Baja California Sur .

The first description as Opuntia molesta by Townshend Stith Brandegee was published in 1889. Frederik Marcus Knuth placed the species in the genus Cylindropuntia in 1936 . A distinction is made between the following varieties :

  • Cylindropuntia molesta var. Molesta
  • Cylindropuntia molesta var. Clavellina (Engelm. Ex JMCoult.) Rebman

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
