Cylindropuntia caribaea is a species of the genus Cylindropuntia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet caribaea means '(Latin caribaeus) Caribbean'.
description
Cylindropuntia caribaea grows shrubby, forms thickets with often almost horizontal branches and reaches heights of growth of up to 3 meters. On the sturdy up to 10 centimeters long and about 1 centimeter in diameter shoot sections are clearly recognizable short humps. The large areoles have white wool and hair and dark brown glochids . The one to three thorns are up to 3 inches long. Their sheaths are brown.
The flowers are light yellow. The red fruits are (almost) thornless. They are up to 2 inches long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Cylindropuntia caribaea is found in Haiti , the Dominican Republic , Trinidad and Tobago , the Netherlands Antilles and Venezuela .
The first description as Opuntia caribaea by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose was published in 1919. Frederik Marcus Knuth placed the species in 1930 in the genus Cylindropuntia .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
