Cylindropuntia kleiniae is a species of the genus Cylindropuntia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German botanist Jacob Theodor Klein . Spanish common names are "Cardoncillo", "Klein's Cholla", "Tasajillo" and "Tasajo".

Cylindropuntia kleiniae grows shrubby, has few and open branches and reaches heights of 0.5 to 2.5 meters. On the 4 to 20 centimeters long and 0.6 to 1.2 centimeters in diameter shoot sections there are clearly recognizable bumps. The yellow woolen areoles become darker with age and have yellow glochids 0.5 to 2.5 millimeters long . The one to four thorns are present or sometimes absent on almost all areoles. They are needle-like, straight to slightly curved, often turned back, yellow to gray and have a lighter tip. The thorns are 1 to 3 inches long.

The flowers are greenish at their base and red or magenta towards their tips. The obovate to cylindrical, initially green fruits are fleshy, thornless and later turn red. They are 1.3 to 3.4 inches long and 1 to 2 inches in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cylindropuntia kleiniae is common in the United States in the states of New Mexico and Texas, and from northern to central Mexico in the vegetation of the Chihuahua Desert .

The first description as Opuntia kleiniae by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle was published in 1828. Frederik Marcus Knuth placed the species in 1930 in the genus Cylindropuntia .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
