Cylindropuntia whipplei is a species of plant in the genus Cylindropuntia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). description

Cylindropuntia whipplei grows tree-like or shrubby, low to upright, sparsely to richly branched and reaches heights of 0.5 to 1.3 meters. The branches stand together (almost) in whorls . On the green, slender, 3 to 15 centimeters long and 0.5 to 2.2 centimeters in diameter shoot sections are very clearly recognizable short humps. The triangular, light yellow to white woolly areoles turn gray with age and have yellow glochids 1 to 3 millimeters long . The one to ten white to reddish brown, two-shaped thorns , usually three to eight, are present on all areoles. The upper four to six thorns are strong, spread out crosswise and 0.6 to 1.1 centimeters long. The usually four lateral, slender, slightly flattened, bent back basal spines reach a length of 5 to 8 millimeters. The thorn sheaths are white to light yellow.

The light yellow, yellow to greenish yellow flowers have a diameter of up to 2 centimeters. The broadly cylindrical to almost spherical, yellow to yellowish green fruits are soft to fleshy and not thorny. They are 1.8 to 3.5 inches long and 1.5 to 3.2 inches in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cylindropuntia whipplei is common in the United States in the states of Utah , Colorado , Arizona and New Mexico in the Upper Desert, in grass and woodlands, in pine forests and the Sagebrush Desert at altitudes of 900 to 2300 meters.

The first description as Opuntia whipplei by George Engelmann and John Milton Bigelow was published in 1856. Frederik Marcus Knuth placed the species in the genus Cylindropuntia in 1936 . A nomenclature synonym is Grusonia whipplei (Engelm. & JMBigelow) GDRowley (2006).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The species is very richly represented, so that the development of the populations is regarded as stable.
