Pediocactus simpsonii subsp. idahoensis is a subspecies of the plant species Pediocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet refers to the main occurrence in the potato state Idaho . English common names are "Caespitose Cactus" and "Idaho Cactus".
description
Pediocactus simpsonii subsp. idahoensis forms groups with up to 30 heads. The groups reach heights of growth of up to 35 cm and a diameter of 60 cm.
The flowers appear in a wreath around the apex. The bell-shaped, hermaphrodite flowers have a length of up to 2.5 cm and a diameter of 2 cm to 3 cm. The bracts are yellow or rarely pink. The flowering period extends from April to June.
Systematics and distribution
The typical subspecies Pediocactus simpsonii subsp. idahoensis in the high mountains of Idaho and Nevada is hardly known in the USA and Europe and is accordingly rare in the collections.
Pediocactus simpsonii subsp. idahoensis grows in Idaho and in the border area in Nevada , in the Rocky Mountains at altitudes between 900 and 2500 meters on plains, rocky outcrops or stony hills.
The description as Pediocactus simpsonii subsp. idahoensis was carried out in 1997 by Fritz Hochstätter.
