loop
Loop in the sense of the knot is a fixed eye (O-shaped piece) in rope and tape that does not come loose and does not close.
They exist:
- as a knot (like the bowline )
- as a knotted, spliced, pressed, sewn or similarly fixed eye on the rope / tape end
- as endless loops and tape loops , ring-shaped connected (spliced, knotted or sewn) loops
In technical terms, is called loop only the tapering (tight- ening) sling, as the hangman's knot : Taking a free end through the loop at Tau or in band, you get the easiest loop - the vernacular does not apply this distinction. An open rope loop (U-shaped piece of rope) is called a bay , if it runs around a solid piece, as a (half) lay.
Functions and uses
The following loops have their own name in their application:
- Knot loops are accessory cords knotted into loops that are used as a replacement for clamping wedges .
- In mountain sports, a seat sling is an approximately 1.20 m long sling that replaces a climbing harness as a makeshift loop .
- The lasso knot is used as a loop in a lasso . The rope is pulled through the loop, which then forms a loop.
- An arm sling in medicine is a fixed loop.
- The lanyard is a strap , often printed with advertising, for event ID cards , keys , wallets , MP3 players and other items.
In textile materials
Special importance is the loop of textile materials for the pile fabric , which is perpendicular thread sheets, then float called, are incorporated into the surface. They can be left or cut open. These fabrics include carpets , (real) velvet or terrycloth .
A special application of the loop is the Velcro fastener : one side remains in loops, the other side is cut open so that hooks are formed. When closing, the hooks hang in the loops; Due to their large number, there is a firm adhesive bond, which can also be easily removed again.
