A band is a textile fabric with a limited width (up to 40 cm wide) and solid selvedges on both sides . The weaving of ribbons and belts evolved from general weaving .

In the past, ribbons made of silk , cotton and other materials, mostly made by home-based work on ribbon knitting frames or multi-course ribbon chairs, were used for binding, as trimming strips, ribbon decorations and other fashionable plastering . Ribbons have also been a tradition for a long time, especially in traditional costumes . Their uses are broad; it ranges from the name-day and birthday ribbons of the children to the colorfully decorated hats of the recruits , the sashes of the diplomats and club boards during festive parades, the craftsmen's ribbons on the parlor signs of the guilds , the flags of associations and clubs, the lute and dance ribbons towards the grain bands of the 19th century harvest. A special group in this context are the so-called Vivat bands .

On the ribbon looms (see ribbon weaving ) of the more recent times, for example, hat and typewriter ribbons , belt straps for roller shutters , bookmark ribbons for letterpress printing, ribbons for wrapping gifts and for labeling items of clothing are manufactured. In this context, the requirements placed on products such as seat belts in means of transport and tension belts in transport are particularly high .

Narrow textiles have been woven mainly on needle looms since the 1970s. The machines can be equipped with a jacquard device for complex patterns with up to several dozen colors or for ribbons with changing widths with two weaving systems one behind the other. Elastic tapes , seat belts , curtain tapes , hem tapes and other types of fabric tapes are manufactured on special machines.
