Jacquard pattern

Jacquard pattern is a binding technique , a substantial extension of the design of web and knitted fabric allows.

Joseph-Marie Jacquard , a French weaver, invented a device in 1805 with the help of which one could control every warp thread on the loom and thus weave patterns of multiple sizes and diversity. This enabled endless patterns of any complexity to be produced mechanically for the first time. His machines, known as jacquard looms , were the first to use punch cards to generate patterns. With them, almost any complex pattern could be woven into the fabric.

A few decades later, patterning devices for knitting and warp-knitting machines were constructed according to the Jacquard principle .

Handicrafts with jacquard pattern

With the jacquard technique, you can create clearly defined patterns of different shapes in hand-knitted , embroidered or crocheted textiles .

Knitted jacquard

The knitted stitch is processed with 2-4 or more colorful threads . To transition from one color to the other, the technique of crossed threads is used (this means that there is no hole). On the right side only stitches of the following color are visible, while the previous thread is pulled through on the left side of the knitted fabric .

Embroidery on the knitted base

The embroidery is carried out from right to left with the so-called mesh stitch. The knitted stitches are embroidered with other colors like stitches. The threads are sewn on the back. The embroidery is always based on a (printed or written) counting template.

Crochet a jacquard pattern

It is crocheted like when knitting according to a counting template. The motifs mostly have geometric shapes, the mesh height is not as precise as when knitting. When changing the color, the thread that is not required is fed to the back.

use

The knitted work is mainly used for sweaters with Norwegian or large-scale patterns. The other jacquard patterns are recommended for small motifs in small numbers.

In the three patterns shown, both the material ( PAN / BW 370 tex ) and the number of stitches are the same.
