Bernard James Sheil (born February 18, 1888 in Chicago , Illinois , † September 13, 1969 in Tucson , Arizona ) was auxiliary bishop in Chicago.

Life

Bernard James Sheil, who grew up in Chicago, received on 21 May 1910, the sacrament of the priesthood by Archbishop James Edward Quigley .

Pius XI. appointed him on March 25, 1928 auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Chicago and titular bishop of Pegae . The Archbishop of Chicago George Cardinal Mundelein consecrated him on May 1 of the same year as bishop ; Co- consecrators were Edward Francis Hoban , Bishop of Rockford and Edmund Michael Dunne , Bishop of Peoria . He became titular Archbishop of Selge on June 5, 1959 .

Bishop Sheil was the founder of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) in 1930. In 1933 he founded Lewis University in Romeoville under the name Holy Name Technical School . In 1939 he co-founded the Industrial Areas Foundation . In 1942 he received the Silver Buffalo Award from the Boy Scouts of America and in 1953 the Federal President's Cross of Merit .
