The archbishopric was founded on November 28, 1843 from areas of the dioceses of Saint Louis and Vincennes and was under the Archdiocese of Saint Louis as a suffragan diocese .
As early as July 29, 1853, the Quincy diocese and the Peoria diocese on February 12, 1875, were removed from their territory and Chicago itself was elevated to an archbishopric and metropolitan seat on September 10, 1880 . There were other areas on September 27, 1908 for the Diocese of Rockford and December 11, 1948 for the Diocese of Joliet in Illinois .
