Albert Meyer (Cardinal)
Albert Gregory Cardinal Meyer (born March 9, 1903 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin , USA , † April 9, 1965 in Chicago ) was Archbishop of Chicago .
Life
Gregory Albert Meyer, the grandson of a German immigrant couple from Kalenborn-chafing in Gerolstein (Eifel), attended school in Milwaukee and studied in Milwaukee and Rome trays Catholic theology and philosophy . On 11 July 1926 he was in Rome by Cardinal Vicar Basilio Pompili the sacrament of holy orders and received his doctorate there in 1930 to the doctor of theology .
From 1930 he was chaplain in Waukesha. From 1931 to 1946 he taught at the Milwaukee seminary , which he headed as Regens from 1937 . On February 14, 1938, Pope Pius XI awarded him the title of house prelate to His Holiness .
On February 18, 1946, Pope Pius XII appointed him . to the Bishop of Superior . He was ordained episcopal on April 11th of the same year by the Archbishop of Milwaukee , Moses Elias Kiley . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Fargo , Aloysius Muench , and his predecessor, the Bishop of Madison , William Patrick O'Connor .
Pope Pius XII appointed Albert Meyer on July 21, 1953 Archbishop of Milwaukee. On September 19, 1958, he was named Archbishop of Chicago. Pope John XXIII took him on December 14, 1959 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Cecilia in the college of cardinals . Albert Meyer took part in the first three sessions of the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 . He died after a heart attack in Chicago's Mercy Hospital and was buried in the Mundelein Seminary Cemetery in the Archdiocese of Chicago.
