William Edward Cousins

William Edward Cousins (born August 20, 1902 in Chicago , United States , † September 14, 1988 in Milwaukee ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Milwaukee from 1959 to 1977 .

Life

After his ordination on April 23, 1927 by Cardinal George William Mundelein for the Archdiocese of Chicago , he was on December 17, 1948 by Pope Pius XII. Appointed auxiliary bishop in Chicago and titular bishop of Forma . He received the episcopal ordination on March 7, 1949 by Cardinal Samuel Alphonse Stritch . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Rockford , John Joseph Boylan , and the Bishop of Belleville , Albert Rudolph Zuroweste .

On December 19, 1952, he was appointed bishop of Peoria and on December 18, 1958, Pope John XXIII appointed him . to the Archbishop of Milwaukee. He participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father.

Pope Paul VI accepted his age-related resignation on September 17, 1977.
