Joseph Henry Leo Schlarman (born February 23, 1879 in Breese , Illinois , United States , † November 10, 1951 in Peoria , Illinois) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Peoria .

Life

Joseph Henry Leo Schlarman was born the tenth child of a German immigrant family. First he began studying medicine in Quincy , but switched to theology after four years. He completed his studies in Innsbruck and Rome, among others . He received on 29 June 1904 Brixen Cathedral the priesthood for the Diocese of Belleville .

Pope Pius XI appointed him on April 16, 1930 Bishop of Peoria. The Archbishop of Chicago , George Cardinal Mundelein , donated him episcopal ordination on June 17 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Henry J. Althoff , Bishop of Belleville, and Edward Francis Hoban , Bishop of Rockford .

Despite his poor health - he had to undergo fifteen operations - he achieved a reorganization and financial consolidation of the diocese. He initiated an extensive renovation of the cathedral and campaigned for the liturgical education of the laity. On June 27, 1951, a few weeks before his death, Pope Pius XII awarded him . the personal title of archbishop .
