The Archdiocese of Milwaukee ( Latin Archidioecesis Milvauchiensis , English Archdiocese of Milwaukee ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States based in Milwaukee , Wisconsin .
Territory of the Archdiocese
The area of the archbishopric includes the city of Milwaukee and Milwaukee Counties and the areas of Dodge County , Fond du Lac County , Kenosha County , Ozaukee County , Racine County , Sheboygan County , Walworth County , Washington County, and Waukesha County in the state of Wisconsin.
history
The diocese was on November 28, 1843 by Pope Gregory XVI. built. On February 12, 1875, the diocese of Pope Pius IX. raised to the archbishopric. The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist is the episcopal church of the Archdiocese.
In early January 2011 it was announced that the Archdiocese of Milwaukee was bankrupt due to previous compensation payments to victims of abuse .
Important church buildings
Next to the cathedral is the Basilica of St. Josaphat in Milwaukee . The Basilica of Mary Help of Christians on Holy Hill is a popular pilgrimage site in Erin, Wisconsin.
