The Diocese of Venice ( Latin : Dioecesis Venetiae in Florida ) is a Roman Catholic diocese located in Florida in the United States , with its seat in Venice .

history

Pope John Paul II founded it with the Apostolic Constitution Postulat quandoque on June 16, 1984 from cession of territory by the dioceses of Orlando , Saint Petersburg and the Archdiocese of Miami , to which it was also subordinated as a suffragan diocese. After the end of the American Civil War in 1865, Catholic missionaries traveled to what is now the diocese of Venice. Several mission stations and Catholic parishes were established there by 1918.
