John Nevins

John Joseph Nevins (born January 19, 1932 in New Rochelle , USA , † August 26, 2014 in Venice (Florida) ) was Bishop of Venice .

Life

John Nevins studied for his school at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC , the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology and social work at Tulane University in New Orleans . He received the sacrament of ordination on June 6, 1959 in the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC He then worked for twenty years as a pastor in various parishes in the Archdiocese of Miami , including as Vicar General .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Rusticiana and auxiliary bishop in Miami on January 25, 1979 . He was ordained episcopal on March 24th of the same year by the Archbishop of Miami, Edward Anthony McCarthy . Co- consecrators were René Henry Gracida , Bishop of Pensacola-Tallahassee , and John Joseph Fitzpatrick , Bishop of Brownsville . His episcopal motto was To Serve with Mercy .

On July 17, 1984, Nevins was named first bishop of the newly formed Diocese of Venice, Florida. He was instituted on October 25, 1984 by the pro-nuncio in the USA, Archbishop Pio Laghi . Bishop Nevins was responsible for Christian-Jewish dialogue in the United States Bishops' Conference . He was vice president of the Florida regional bishops' conference.

On January 19, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age.

John Nevins was Grand Officer of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and in 1992 was involved in the establishment of the Southeastern Lieutenancy in the USA. He was co-founder in 1994 of the Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land (FFHL Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land). He was a trustee of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association .
