The Diocese of Superior ( Latin Dioecesis Superiorensis , English Diocese of Superior ) is a Roman Catholic diocese located in Wisconsin in the United States , with its seat in Superior .

history

The area at Lake Superior , one of the geologically oldest landscapes in the world, was populated by Anishinabe Indians from the late 15th century . The Frenchman Étienne Brûlé is considered the first European to discover the Obersee . About forty years later, in 1661, the first Jesuit missionaries came from Sault Sainte Marie . A few years later, Claude-Jean Allouez SJ founded the Holy Spirit Mission near La Pointe on Madeline Island , with which the first Catholic Church in North America north of Mexico and west of Lake Huron came into being. In the 19th century, the Slovenian secular priest Friedrich Baraga expanded the mission until he was promoted to bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Upper Michigan in 1853 and later to the first bishop of Marquette .

In 1878 Franciscans (OFM) from the Order of St. Louis founded a branch that still exists today.

On May 3, 1905, Pope Pius X founded the new Diocese of Superior from the cession of the dioceses of Green Bay and La Crosse .
