The Diocese of Lexington ( Latin Dioecesis Lexingtonensis , English Diocese of Lexington ) is a Roman Catholic diocese located in Kentucky in the United States , with its seat in Lexington .
history
Pope John Paul II founded the Diocese of Lexington on January 14, 1988 from cessions of 43 counties of the Diocese of Covington and 7 counties of the Archdiocese of Louisville , to which it was also subordinated as a suffragan diocese.
The solemn ceremony of the establishment of the diocese and the inauguration of the first bishop, James Kendrick Williams, took place on March 2, 1988 at the Cathedral of Christ the King, which was elevated to the status of cathedral.
