Located in the USA , the Archdiocese of Indianapolis ( Latin : Archidioecesis Indianapolitana ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Indianapolis , Indiana .

It was spun off from the Bardstown diocese on May 6, 1834 and established as the Vincennes diocese with the territories of Indiana and eastern Illinois . As such, it now belonged to the ecclesiastical province of Cincinnati . On November 28, 1843, there were with the diocese of Saint Louis from some areas to establish the diocese of Chicago , before the diocese of Fort Wayne was detached from it on January 8, 1857 . On March 28, 1898, the diocese changed its name to Indianapolis. On October 21, 1944, the Diocese of Evansville was established from parts of the diocesan territory .

Since October 21, 1944, Indianapolis has been an archdiocese whose ecclesiastical province includes the state of Indiana and the therein located bishoprics Gary and Lafayette in Indiana .
