The Diocese of Allentown ( lat. : Dioecesis Alanpolitana ) is in the United States located Roman Catholic diocese , based in Allentown .

It was founded on January 28, 1961 from areas of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and is subject to this until today as a suffragan .

The diocese covers the areas of Berks , Carbon , Lehigh , Northampton and Schuylkill Counties .

The bishops since the foundation were:

  1. Joseph Mark McShea (1961-1983)
  2. Thomas Jerome Welsh (1983–1997)
  3. Edward Peter Cullen (1997-2009)
  4. John Oliver Barres (2009–2016), then Bishop of Rockville Center
  5. Alfred A. Schlert (since 2017)
