Thomas Jerome Welsh , also Thomas J. Welsh , (born December 20, 1921 in Weatherly , Pennsylvania , USA , † February 19, 2009 in Allentown , Pennsylvania, USA) was Bishop of Arlington and Allentown .

Life

Thomas Jerome Welsh, born into an Irish Catholic family with five children, entered St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood, Montgomery County, when he was 15 . He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia on May 30, 1946 . He received his doctorate in canon law from the Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington . He was initially a pastor in Philadelphia and Doylestown . From 1949 he became a professor at Southeast Catholic High School, now Saint John Neumann High School.

On February 18, 1970, Pope Paul VI appointed him . as titular bishop of Inis Cathaig and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He was ordained bishop by the Archbishop of Philadelphia, Cardinal John Joseph Krol , on April 2nd of the same year; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops in Philadelphia Gerald Vincent McDevitt and John Joseph Graham .

In 1974 he was appointed the first bishop of the Diocese of Arlington in Virginia . During his tenure as founding Bishop in Arlington, he had to deal with important issues related to the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) , the anti-nuclear movement and abortion . Among other things, he founded several schools. He was the namesake of the Bishop Thomas J. Welsh Hall at DeSales University in Allentown.

In 1983 Pope John Paul II named him second bishop of Allentown , Pennsylvania . Here, too, he campaigned for the abolition of abortion and founded the Stand Up For Life movement ; He also campaigned for youth and the education of children. He founded the Catholic Home Study Institute .

In 1997, his age-related resignation was granted by John Paul II.
