history

On November 15, 1947, the Archdiocese of Washington was founded by dividing the Archdiocese of Baltimore-Washington with its own archbishop's seat, but was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Baltimore as a suffragan .

On October 12, 1965, it was elevated to a metropolitan diocese and assigned to the diocese of Saint Thomas as a suffragan. On May 28, 1974, some areas were given up for the newly established diocese of Arlington .

In the summer of 2018, the incumbent Archbishop Donald Wuerl was criticized before the competent jury for his handling of sexual abuse as Bishop of Pittsburgh . On August 16, 2018, the Archdiocese of Washington removed the Wuerl Report website , which it had set up to protect Wuerl against allegations of abuse in Pennsylvania , following public criticism. On 12 October 2018 Pope took Francis Wuerls of resignation, emeritus local bishop Theodore McCarrick was born on February 16, 2019 for sexual abuse laicized .

The largest church in the archbishopric is not St. Matthew's Cathedral , but the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, completed in 1961 .

The archbishopric is also the sponsor of numerous charitable institutions. These include a. three hospitals, 16 homes for the elderly, the chronically ill and the disabled, 49 facilities for the disabled and 16 health centers. In addition, there are 3 colleges and universities, 17 high schools and 91 elementary schools in the area of ​​the Archdiocese .
