Patrick Aloysius Cardinal O'Boyle (born July 18, 1896 in Scranton , USA , † August 10, 1987 in Washington ) was Archbishop of Washington .

Life

Patrick O'Boyle studied at St. Thomas College and the Seminary St. Joseph's Seminary and College in Dunwoodie ( Yonkers ). On May 21, 1921, he received the sacrament of ordination . Until 1926 he worked as a parish chaplain in the Archdiocese of New York . From 1932 to 1936 he was a teacher at a school for social work , from 1936 to 1943 he was the director of the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin on Staten Island . In 1941 he was appointed secret chamberlain to His Holiness , in 1944 that of the papal house prelate. From 1943 to 1947 he was in charge of Caritas in the Archdiocese of New York.

On November 29, 1947, Pope Pius XII appointed him . the first archbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington, established two weeks earlier . He received the episcopal ordination on January 14, 1948 by the Archbishop of New York, Francis Cardinal Spellman . Co-consecrators were John Michael McNamara (en) , Titular Bishop of Eumenia and Auxiliary Bishop in Washington DC, and Henry Theophilus Klonowski , Titular Bishop of Daldis and Auxiliary Bishop of Scranton .

Patrick Aloysius O'Boyle attended the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 . On August 28, 1963, he said the opening prayer of the rally at the March on Washington for Work and Freedom , where Martin Luther King gave his I Have a Dream speech .

Pope Paul VI took him in 1967 as a cardinal priest with the pro hac vice to title Church gathered Title Diakonie San Nicola in Carcere in the College of Cardinals on. He resigned from the leadership of the Archdiocese of Washington in 1973 for reasons of age. He died on August 10, 1987 in Washington and was buried in the local cathedral .
