Donald William Cardinal Wuerl (born November 12, 1940 in Pittsburgh , USA ) is emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Washington .

Life

Donald W. Wuerl studied theology and philosophy at the Pontifical North America College and received the sacrament of priestly ordination on December 17, 1966 from the college's rector, Bishop Francis Frederick Reh . He studied at the Catholic University of America in Washington and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He received his doctorate in theology from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome . In 1968 Wuerl became secretary to John Joseph Wright , the then Bishop of Pittsburgh. When he was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy in 1969, Wuerl Wright followed to Rome and was minutant at the Congregation for the Clergy until 1980. During this time he also worked for the English-language edition of the magazine L'Osservatore Romano . In 1980 Wuerl returned to Pittsburgh and became vice rector of the local seminary, from 1981 to 1985 he was its rector.

On November 30, 1985, he was named Titular Bishop of Rossmarkaeum and Auxiliary Bishop in Seattle by Pope John Paul II . He received his episcopal ordination on January 6, 1986 in Rome by the Pope personally; Co- consecrators were Cardinal Secretary of State Agostino Casaroli and Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops , Bernardin Gantin . There were conflicts between Wuerl and Archbishop Raymond Gerhardt Hunthausen because of Hunthausen's liberal positions. After the leadership of the Archdiocese of Seattle was divided between Hunthausen and Wuerl, the auxiliary bishop resigned on May 26, 1987. He explained that this form of cooperation between himself and Hunthausen “didn't work”.

On February 11, 1988, he was named Bishop of Pittsburgh . On May 16, 2006 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as the successor of Cardinal Theodor Edgar McCarríck to Archbishop of Washington and thus to the shepherd of a diaspora with a Catholic share of only 14%.

He has chaired the Doctrine of the Faith Commission and has served on several other committees of the United States Bishops' Conference . Wuerl has been chaplain of the Order of Malta in the USA since 1999 and is also a Knight of Columbus . He is involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land and is a Grand Officer of the Papal Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . His works The Teaching of Christ and The Catholic Way are bestsellers.

In the solemn consistory of November 20, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI accepted him. as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Pietro in Vincoli in the college of cardinals .

Cardinal Wuerl took after the resignation of Benedict XVI. the conclave in 2013 in part, in which Pope Francis has been selected.

On October 12, 2018, Pope Francis accepted Archbishop Wuerl's resignation. The Pope appointed him apostolic administrator for the period of sedi vacancy until May 21 of the following year .

Act

In January 2017, he criticized the entry ban imposed by Donald Trump on citizens from predominantly Muslim countries and warned in a letter to the priests of the Archdiocese of Washington against a ban on refugees.

In the summer of 2018, an investigation report by the Pennsylvania state grand jury criticized Wuerl for dealing with sexual abuse in the diocese of Pittsburgh . On August 16, 2018, the Archdiocese of Washington removed the Wuerl Report website , which it had set up to protect Wuerl against allegations of abuse of Pennsylvania, after public criticism.
