Pietro Sambi

Pietro Sambi (born June 27, 1938 in Sogliano al Rubicone , Forlì-Cesena , Italy ; † July 27, 2011 in Baltimore , USA ) was an Italian clergyman, archbishop and diplomat of the Holy See .
Life
Pietro Sambi was ordained a priest on March 14, 1964 and then received his doctorate as Dr. theol. and to the Dr. iur. can. at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. In 1969 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. Pope Paul VI awarded him the honorary title of chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) on January 27, 1971 . Sambi worked in Cameroon , Cuba (1974) and Algeria (1978) before joining the Apostolic Nunciature in Nicaragua in 1979 during the transition from Anastasio Somoza Debayle to the Sandinista government under Daniel Ortega . In 1978 he moved to Belgium . On June 18, 1982, Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness . In 1984 he worked in the Apostolic Nunciature in India .
John Paul II appointed him titular Archbishop of Bellicastrum on October 10, 1985 and appointed him Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Burundi . He was ordained bishop on November 9, 1985 by Jozef Cardinal Tomko , Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples ; Co -consecrators were Archbishop Cesare Zacchi , President of the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy , and Giovanni Locatelli , Bishop of Rimini.
In 1991 he moved to Indonesia as a pro-nuncio . In 1998 Sambi became Apostolic Nuncio in Israel and Cyprus and Apostolic Delegate in Jerusalem and Palestine . In 2005 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . permanent observer with the Organization of American States in Washington, DC and Nuncio in the United States .
Sambi was the Order of Malta Conventual Chaplain in the United States.
He died of complications from lung surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and was buried on August 2, 2011 in his hometown, Sogliano al Rubicone.
