Charles Bradley (* 5. November 1948 in Gainesville , Florida ; † 23. September 2017 in New York ) was an American Soul - singer .

Life

Charles Bradley grew up in poverty in New York district of Brooklyn on. In Bar Harbor , Maine, he trained as a chef . He later became head chef at a mental hospital in Wassaic , New York State . He spent the next 17 years as a chef in California and, in addition to his small-scale work, appeared as a singer in various bands.

After several strokes of fate, he gave up his learned profession, returned to New York and devoted himself only to music. He appeared in local Brooklyn clubs under the name Black Velvet on a James Brown tribute show. There he was discovered by an employee of the small record label Daptone Records , which specializes in retro soul . Bradley's first single was released in 2002. In early 2011 his late debut album No Time for Dreaming came out. The following summer Bradley went on an extensive tour through Europe and the USA, performing at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark and at the Jazz Fest Vienna , among others .

Charles Bradley, nicknamed "The Screaming Eagle of Soul", died on September 23, 2017 at the age of 68 from stomach cancer .
