Andrea Cardinal Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo (born August 27, 1925 in Turin , † November 19, 2017 in Rome ) was archpriest of the Patriarchal Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls and diplomat of the Holy See .

Andrea Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo came from an old Piedmontese aristocratic family (such as the former director of Ferrari Luca Cordero di Montezemolo ), from which numerous officers , diplomats and cardinals over the centuries . As one of five children Andrea came from the marriage of Amalia Dematteis and Giuseppe Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo . He was an officer and resistance fighter who was shot by the SS during the massacre in the Ardeatine Caves in 1944 . As a young man, Andrea joined the resistance against the German occupiers and had to hide in the Ukrainian seminary in Rome .

He first completed an architecture degree in Rome in 1949 and worked as an architect, among others for Pier Luigi Nervi . He studied - parallel to his five years as assistant at the chair for construction technology of the Roman architecture faculty - at the Pontifical Gregorian University Catholic theology (1952) and philosophy (1954); During this time he was also a seminarian at the Almo Collegio Capranica . After 45 years, he was the first diplomatic representative of the Holy See and established diplomatic relations with Israel during the first Intifada and the Gulf Crisis. After the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the State of Israel in 1994, in which he played a major role, he also became the first apostolic nuncio in Israel. Pope John Paul II described Montezemolo as "Our historical nuncio".

In 1998, John Paul II appointed him nuncio in Italy and San Marino and on April 17, 2001, after Montezemolo had reached the age limit of 75, accepted his resignation.

In 2001 he was responsible for the reorganization of the administration and the pilgrimage in the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome and in 2005 designed the coat of arms of Pope Benedict XVI.
