The Roman Catholic Diocese of Columbus ( lat. : Dioecesis Columbensis ) is in the United States located Roman Catholic diocese , based in Columbus , Ohio .

history

The diocese Columbus was on March 3, 1868 by Pope Pius IX. built from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and subordinated to this as a suffragan . On October 21, 1944, the Diocese of Columbus gave up parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Steubenville .

The territory of the Diocese of Columbus includes the counties Coshocton , Delaware , Fairfield , Fayette , Franklin , Hardin , Hocking , Holmes , Jackson , Knox , Licking , Madison , Marion , Morrow , Perry , Pickaway , Pike , Ross , Scioto , Tuscarawas , Union , Vinton and Washington .
