That in the United States located Diocese of Portland ( Latin Dioecesis Portlandensis , English Diocese of Portland ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church . It was on July 29, 1850 by Pope Pius IX. Detached from areas of the Boston diocese and founded as an independent diocese within the ecclesiastical province of Baltimore . It covers the state of Maine and is based in Portland .
